YUMA, AZ – Thanks to an aggressive mindset at the plate, Yuma High won its first game of the season, 12-11, against San Luis after coming back from a three-run deficit in the first two innings.

“It is an exciting feeling,” Yuma head coach Dena DuBois said. “I am glad we are experiencing it and we definitely worked hard for it.”

Yuma came out flat in the first inning, being struck out consistently by San Luis’ pitcher Kiabeth Soto. This play style carried over into the second inning where San Luis took advantage of Yuma being flat; for instance, when short stop Doraddy Pulido hit a triple allowing outfielder Fabrielly Bobadilla to make it home. As the inning progressed, Yuma got runners on base, but they were inefficient in bringing them home.

After losing all their games leading up to defeating San Luis at-bat this time around, what worked well this time around was their commitment to their plan of attack.

“Our plan of attack was staying aggressive at the plate,” DuBois said.

The bottom of the fourth inning was Yuma’s breakthrough, Karina Lozano’s smashing hit to the right field led her all the way to third. Nicole Green and Sophia Gann eventually filled up the remaining bases. Destiny Reyes got a walk-in RBI to bring Lozano home, Green and Gann eventually made it home for three runs in the inning.

Yuma’s starting pitcher, Gann, played one of her strongest games of the season in the circle especially towards the sixth and seventh inning. She struck out four players between these two innings which is something DuBois recognized.

“Her confidence level is rising up,” DuBois said of Gann. “I saw a completely different pitcher from the first inning to the seventh inning.”

After six innings, Yuma was tied, 9-9. San Luis’ Rachellt Barraza’s RBI double allowed her team to progress up the bases. The Criminals comeback wasn’t fulfilled yet since San Luis scored another two runs giving them the lead once again in the final inning.

With the score being 11-9, Yuma’s Destiny Reyes is up to bat with Gann and Green on second and third base waiting to come home. Reyes hits an RBI double allowing Gann and Green to tie things up. Only one more run was holding Yuma back from taking home their first win. With Daisha Rodriguez at-bat, an RBI to let Erica Sanchez make it home to end the game 12-11.

Finally, Yuma won, but it doesn’t stop there. DuBois knows what her team needs to keep the momentum going.

“Staying aggressive, but smart on the bases, hitting and attacking,” DuBois said.
