Last week on Tuesday and Thursday, the Yuma High baseball team had a win away and a loss at home in their hands in two games against the Buckeye Hawks.

Tuesday night, Yuma High was able to win against Buckeye, 8-2,  for the first win of the season and the first personal win of head coach Nicholas Johnson’s coaching career.

“It’s a weight off of our shoulders as a team, to be knocking on the door as long as we have, and to have nobody answer has been tough,” Johnson said. “For as hard as these kids work they deserve that W.”

However, hopes of a streak were shattered Thursday night when Buckeye was able to turn the tables win with a score of 13-0 the second time around.

“We didn’t show up to play,” Johnson said.

As far as the outlook for the new season, getting into the groove of winning is what the baseball team aims for to rack up a more formidable record. Winning games like the one against Buckeye created a starting point for the team that will prove crucial for the rest of the season.

“These are the games that count, if you can get hot, and put yourself into good situations to collect Wins all that happened before doesn’t matter. Just like March Madness with the Conference tournaments before hand,” Jonson said. “The team that is picking up momentum is going to well, everything that has happened before is a wash.”
