This review will be about the quality and overall experience pertained to the movie itself. This review will contain no spoilers to the story; however, there will be references to the main cast.

Following the success of the original Guardians of the Galaxy, Volume 2 expands upon what made the original good and gave us more of that without falling short like most sequels do.

Anyone who hasn’t seen the original movie can see this movie and enjoy it in its entirety, but will be pretty lost if they haven’t seen the first installment, which is why I recommend seeing the original before watching this one.

Peter Quill, Gamora, Drax, Rocket, and Baby Groot from the original movie makes their return in this newest installment, which expands upon their stories and gives us a new one, along with newer characters coming along for the ride like: Nebula (Gomora’s sister), Yondu, and Mantis (a bug-like empathy sensing character) .

What made the original good is still surprisingly present within this sequel. There is still a lot of banter within the group, character development, and the 70’s soundtrack playlist trickled within; not to mention, the movie plot itself doesn’t just focus on one person, it focuses on the group as a whole while keeping the story centered on one subject. For example, while Peter Quinn is somewhere else doing something with someone else, Rocket is busy focusing on a completely unrelated topic within the story that manages to tie back into Quinn’s arc. That is GOOD storytelling, it doesn’t stick with one person, it shows you how every single event ties together with the characters; there is literally no Dues Ex Machinima (coincidences that pushes the story along with no explanation on how or why it happened) within this movie that I can recall.

Four new characters have been introduced, and without spoiling them, they are pretty fleshed out throughout the movie except one character: Mantis. She just exists as the awkward comic relief and doesn’t have any character to her besides being quirky, antisocial, and awkward. She has some unique powers to add to the team, but overall, those are her only defining characteristics; however, it doesn’t make her presence throughout the movie less enjoyable, but it would help if she was fleshed out a little bit more than just simply existing. The whole movie just glosses around her existence and she is one of the most unique characters to be presented compared to the others. The movie doesn’t suffer from this drawback, so I digress.

Overall, if you loved the first movie, you will enjoy this new installment. It focuses on the character development for the most part and how each character deal with their problems while also throwing in a main antagonist and even more characters into the fray. Highly recommended, the comedy and timing is top notch without resorting to low brow crude humor, this is what comedy movies should look at when writing their jokes as it keeps the humor realistic and even knows when to call themselves out on their cliches when they do have to use them. While it may not be perfect in every sense, it is still a joy to watch.

If you liked Guardians of the Galaxy, here are some other movies you can watch afterwards: Star Wars: Rogue One, Star Wars: Episode VII, Avengers series, Thor series, Iron Man trilogy, Captain America series, Deadpool.
